This is an inspiring article about technology integration in education. I can tell you right now that I will be using this model as part of my classroom, school, and district plan of action for technology implementation.

Schad's epiphany about his kids use of technology, accents the reality that our young learners live two lives- one that is filled with social media, gaming, texting and the like, and another in schools where they have to check their tech world at the school building entrance for an out of step traditional learning experience that they reject in many cases. If fact, this rejection is backed up by the data in the article which clearly show improved scores in schools where technology tools were an integral part of the delivery of kids' education.

Even more importantly, the article has anecdotal teacher evidence of unprecedented levels of student engagement. Teachers reported that differentiated learning was also in play as students chose learning options of pen and paper, podcasts, and so on, much like we have avatar, maps, and interactive online activities with Study Island and a host of great resources we have thankfully developed with our innovative instructor, Ms. Edwards- thank you!

  2. It is a fact that the use of mobile devices at school can transform learning among students. This venture can enable the improvement of students’ test scores thus allowing for more student teacher engagement. Students who use mobile devices are able to explore different tools to solicit information pertaining to various subjects. They are able to browse the web to keep abreast with what is happening in this technological world. On the other hand, at the same time, students who spend too much extra time with mobile devices can also develop serious medical conditions if they are not monitored. These students can develop obesity, headaches, tiredness and several more medical conditions. As a result, mobile devices have positive and negative effects on the lives of students.

  3. KISD's initiative to have students engaged with technology produced results that were very encouraging. To have engagement moving from the 70th to 90 th percentile in all subject areas was impresssive. Note also that discipline issues went down, an anxiety free learning environment was created and the school's budget was not significantly impacted.

It was admirable to read that KISD "did comprehensive outreach to parents and family members to educate" them on being "responsible digital citizens". Additionally, the success of the pilot was credited to Cisco's imput which for me emphasized the importance of administrators having reliable internet providers and building relationships with companies and organisations that can assist in funding their needs.

  4. Technology can advance any can room and help many different types of learners. This will give the students the chance to explore the materials in ways that they understand. No one learns the same so having many different tolls will help students succeed.
The part of this article that sticks out to me the most is the increase in students test scores. To see student go from the 60th percentile to the 90th percentile is amazing and a great reason to try the KISD program. Students are more engage; students are writing notes and using blogs to express their feeling about their reading test and the teacher was reading a passage, 4 out of 30 students took notes. I would love to use the KISD initiative in my classroom.

  5. The idea of KISD and BYOD,is inspiring. Many students, and some adults, have to be pried away from their phones. It seems as though students having technology at their fingertips can increase not only engagement, but also their ability to retain all that they're learning which in turn will allow for better grades. I was shocked that students disciplinary problems decrease, but when you ponder about it when students are truly engaged they're to busy to fool around.

I like the fact that when the program was piloted, the parents were given resources to learn about internet safety and the restriction of offensive materials. This connects school life to home life and allows for parental involvement. What I found most impressive was the differentiation, students were allowed to choose pencil and paper, podcast, and etc, which helps students discover their best learning style. I feel like this program is well rounded and was created with the students in mind.

  6. The KISD and BOYD initiative change the traditional way of teaching and learning. The program is very impressive and I think it would be great to try in schools, especially struggling schools. The technology used by the students keep them engage and raises test scores from 60th to 90th percentile. In the article Frazier states that, “Students are now more collaborative, and that type of collaboration in our classrooms is changing the way students learn, and the way teachers plan for learning.” This program caters to all learning styles and abilities in the classroom.

Like we have discussed in class, technology is forcing educators to reconsider the way students’ learn, and how the education students obtain will empower them for the workforce. Education is the foundation on which our society is built; it guides our imagination and curiosity of the unknown. The use of technology in the classroom plays a major role in helping students develop their full potential. Therefore, there has to be a connection between education and the real world, and technology is the bridge that connects these two. I think the KISD and BOYD initiative is doing just that.

  7. The use of mobile devices in the classroom can bring a whole new dimension to the educational field. It will ultimately change the way of teaching, and make it more of a digital world. Technology is becoming the driving force in education, and our students/ children need to be prepared. Technology has the ability to reach the different learning styles of students. I respected the fact that "KISD" reached out to the parents to make them accountable and aware of the rules of using technology strictly for learning.

  8. This article was interesting because it shows how technology can be implemented in a classroom. It would be very useful to use programs or devices that allow students to search online and access information, but does not allow them to text or make phone calls. This seems more realistic in a school setting. from my personal experience, it is very frustrating when students are on the computers but they are limited to the information they can access. For example our network in consistently going down. This limits how far a technology based lesson can go. It's nice to see that companies like cisco are addressing the need for faster more reliable connections. KISD and BOYD changes the way I think of teaching. Many educators often feel that they will be replaced by computers, but technology can foster teaching.Throughout this article and class I have learned first hand hoe technology can assist educators give the best instruction possible to students, and engages children. Using devices will replace textbooks, but it will open doors to a new world information. Technology helps even out the platform for under privileged students and well off children.

  9. This article is very enlightening especially for school and districts who are yet to get on the ball with technology. I like the step by step approach that (KISD) took to get stated. One cannot ignore the cost to implement the infrastructure for technology in schools. However, the long term benefit of improvement in students' engagement and test scores can override that reality. The task for school administrators is to seek funding and other grants from business to defray the cost. When students are better prepared with technology the better equip they will be for the job market. So, a direct investment into education will be an indirect investment into the business sector. After all, in order for a society to progress, all sectors must work hand in hand.
My heart goes out to private schools that are not financially able to equip their facility. I'm currently teaching at an elementary school and this is our major challenge. After taking this class, I'm very enthusiastic about incorporating technology into my teaching practice but our limited resources will be a challenge.I hope that agencies in our community will be willing to reach out. Technology is the turning wheel for a better education.

  10. I see myself as a reflection when I start to read the article, regarding teens effortlessly multitask. It's no doubt that some students and adults do that in their daily basis. I feel the idea of KISD and BYOD would make a rapid shift in education. It's not surprised that students learn better on digital devices and they are ahead of adults. Technology is helpful in term of classroom management. I have seen my students tend to be more discipline when they are on computer playing their favorite education games and reading their favorite books.

  11. This article shows how technology helps to improve the classroom management skills by engaging students. WE are dealing with 21st century kids and they are so used to of multitasking. Providing technology makes them busy in their work . Definitely more discipline, engagement is observed by the teachers from the students using digital devices.
WE have been reading articles that show the importance of technology adn web literacy

  12. With more and more technology entering the school system, this article goes to show how it improves the grades tremendously going from a 60th to 90th percentile. With mobile devices advancing the children’s education it is not a surprise the grades are improving. The main reason why this is working is because the students find learning fun with their devices and playing games that have them learning at the same time. There is still the problem with funding all of this technology; many schools have already stared advancing their class rooms using smart boards and giving students laptops and allowing them to use their own mobile devices like Kindles and tablets and the results support there studies.

  14. There are so many ways in how technology can really benefit and improve students performance, and this article shows several examples of this. One of my favorite ideas was giving students phones to access throughout class when doing research. These phones have no calling or texting features, which allows the teacher and the students to be more focused and less distracted. Students on their phones 24/7; they know how to use the phones and they know how to navigate their way around the phones. Students are already proficient in using cell phones so why not give them a tool that it's easy for them to use so that they can use it more effectively when doing research. Technology is inevitable, and students become more engaged when using these tools.
